  17.     This has proved a nagging issue since the AT&T buyout of NCR and NCR's
  18.     assumption of Computer Systems authority. I have copies of official
  19.     memoranda (intended for public reassurance) that the StarServer E had
  20.     a long-term place in the NCR product mix, but (here's the catch) their
  21.     continued support for the platform was contingent on continued *demand*
  22.     for same. And if NCR prefers to push the 3000 line, we can expect such
  23.     demand to weaken over time.

  32. That they do. We were at one time considering the StarServer E, but once we
  33. accepted NCR's assurances that the 3450 had caught up in SMP support, and
  34. viewing the more comprehensive OSI/GOSIP offerings available for the NCR box,
  35. we gradually shifted our preference. I also expect NCR to support Pentium
  36. upgrades. Ironically, according to one of my sources, StarServers were used
  37. in much of the design/testing of Pentium.

  39. Sadly (for me) some correspondence I'd established with the product manager
  40. of the 3450 were lost between system backups. Without name/address, I can't
  41. even contact him for the latest scoop.
