- In article <1992Dec22.011556.6654@kronos.arc.nasa.gov>, doctor@kronos.arc.nasa.gov writes:
- Can anyone tell me why /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession loads from
- ".Xresources" instead of ".Xdefaults" by default?
-
- A couple of reasons: 1) It allows customers that want to control
- whether or not the resources end up as an X server property or not to
- either put their private resources into .Xresources or .Xdefaults
- respectively. 2) That's the way that MIT distributes the configuration
- and more folks complain when we don't follow the "standard"
- distribution mechanisms.
-
- This is most annoying since the on-line documentation (i.e.,
- "xrdb(1)"
-
- Hmmm. My reading of xrdb(1) is that ~/.Xdefaults is used as a backup
- if the resources are not a property on the root window of the server.
- This is exactly what is happening.
-
- or the Showcase "Customizing Your Environment" slide)?
-
- Don't know about that one.
-
- P.S. I have, of course, edited Xsession to load from $HOME/.Xdefaults
- on all my systems...
-
- That is certainly one of your choices. Personally, I've linked
- .Xresources and .Xdefaults to be the same file.
