- Nathan: while it is true that USENET has its own unique use of English, I can't
- resist quoting from Webster's definition (as found in the NeXT Digital
- Webster):
-
- mar ket place \'ma r-ket-,pla s\ n
- (14c)
- 1a: an open square or place in a town where markets or public sales are held
- b: MARKET (the marketplace is the interpreter of supply and demand)
- 2: the world of trade or economic activity;
-
- Curiously, many other groups in which buying and selling take place are called
- "*.forsale.*" (e.g. misc.forsale.computers., m.f.c.mac, m.f.c.workstations,
- etc.). Hence the selection of the term "marketplace" in preference to the more
- usual "forsale" moniker would seem to imply a scope of interest that goes
- behond simple buying and selling; indeed, one might well argue, something of a
- more commercial nature. So to say that "the title 'marketplace' does not imply
- any commercial connotation whatsoever" seems to be pushing the point a bit.
-
- However, you then go on to say:
-
- > USENET does in fact have groups that are specifically
- > designated for business "for-profit" usage: the
- > biz.* groups.
-
- This is an excellent point.

-
- This likewise seems to me to be an excellent suggestion. However, I can't find
- any biz.next groups at all at my site (which is a major USENET relay). I'd be
- delighted to start one, and invite the participation of the entire developer
- community. I think it would be both informative and exciting. How does one do
- this?
