  26. Funny thing is, total inconsistencies notwithstanding, that
  27. I agree with all this.  For some reason, though I've
  28. objected to it when Glenn Reid and a couple other people did
  29. it (and indeed on earlier occasions when Sam Goldberger did
  30. it), I've been glad more recently to know what Sam has in
  31. his inventory and at what prices.

  33. The "excuse" (not the right word for it) I make in my mind
  34. for Spherical is that Sam is, as far as I know, the only
  35. person who's making a market in several items of great
  36. potential interest to owners of older NeXT hardware, which
  37. includes me.  All the same, it's hardly fair to get after
  38. Glenn; it's not like RightBrain is a giant software
  39. conglomerate, after all.

  41. I guess that for me, one of the key considerations is the
  42. degree to which hype enters into these things.  I have to
  43. smile, because the image just now is white bread -- they
  44. call it "enriched" flour, when all the world knows it's
  45. impoverished flour, nutritionally, compared to the real
  46. thing.

  48. As I say, inconsistencies abound.  Perhaps this is not all
  49. bad.  Anything that requires a person to make an informed,
  50. independent judgment concerning the appropriateness of a
  51. given case, rather than merely apply some sort of algorithm
  52. mindlessly, seems OK to me.

  54. Even then, I know I'm not being entirely consistent (small
  55. minds, etc.).  Bottom-line-wise, I want the information,
  56. plain and unadorned, because I'm almost always on the
  57. lookout for stuff that pertains to my own interests.  As I
  58. look back, the reason I own a NeXT at home, in addition to
  59. the one in my office, is that the famous Businessland fire
  60. sale, with names and phone numbers, was advertised in our
  61. original newsgroup, with the result that I got a used
  62. machine in perfect working order, with not a ding on it, and
  63. have since upgraded it, put in a big hard disk, kept my OS
  64. up to date, and managed to do not only a lot of my best
  65. work, but also to have a hell of a lot of fun with it.
