  21. I just bought StuffIt Deluxe (which includes SpaceSaver).  It is quite
  22. an impressive package.  For the money, it is one of the best pieces of
  23. software I've purchased.

  25. I'm running it on a Mac LCII, 6 Meg, System 7.0.1/TuneUp 1.1.1. with
  26. an 80 Meg hard drive.

  28. SpaceSaver can operate both invisibly or by direct manual control.  In
  29. fact, there are many ways to automatically compress files & folders &
  30. disks.  You can use MagicMenu (a new finder menu) to do the job, or
  31. you can simply flag files & folders with special (user defined) prefix
  32. or suffix on the names.  I've set mine up to compress anything with
  33. (s) on the end.  You can also select items NOT to compress ever (using
  34. similar methods).  What I think is even better is that if I name (or
  35. rename) a file with '.sit' on the end, SpaceSaver automatically
  36. creates a StuffIt archive out it, without loading the StuffIt
  37. application.  Very cool!  Of course, how it handles stuffing and
  38. unstuffing of archives is user configurable as well.

  40. And it is very fast.  I don't have a hot-rod of a Mac, but compression
  41. of a a quarter-meg folder takes but a second or two.  And
  42. decompression of a file or application during open is seemingly
  43. sub-second.  I am getting somewhere between 30% to 40% savings on most
  44. files.

  46. The combination of StuffIt and SpaceSaver make this a great utility.
  47. It is fast, and is as transparent as you choose it to be.  I recommend
  48. it most highly.
