- Firstly, I couldn't find anything on this in the FAQ list. It +ought+ to
- be in the FAQ, IMHO. Maybe it's in the Apple manuals... <sigh>
-
- Often when I try to copy a few files to a disk more than a month old, I
- get a message (in Finnish; can't give you the exact English wording but
- you'll recognize this one) telling me that the copy operation was
- unsuccessful, and offering me the options to either Cancel the copying
- or Continue.
-
- If I'm copying multiple files, clicking Continue will sometimes result
- in the next file being copied to the disk just fine. A trick I
- sometimes employ when calamity strikes is to select a small bogus file
- along with the file I +want+ to copy, and copy them both. If I'm lucky,
- the bad spot on the disk will be within the bogus file, and clicking
- Continue will copy the desired file just fine. That's if I'm lucky (and
- there's enough free space on the disk).
-
- I was under the impression that System 7 would handle these cases more
- gracefully. Now, if I had a mountain of empty disks I wouldn't mind
- much, but this usually happens with disks that are 70% full of my own
- archives and somewhere where I can't just cough up a new disk instead of
- the faulty one.
-
- I've occasionally tried Disk 1st Aid (the one that comes with the
- System; haven't found the newest one yet) and MacTools on these faulty
- disks, but that usually leads to either (a) the disk being flagged as
- perfectly OK or (b) the whole disk being completely trashed, so I don't
- do it anymore.
-
- Also, MacTools will usually somehow succeed in copying a file to a
- semi-faulty disk. Problem is, 50% of the times, the copy will be
- unreadable.
-
- With my limited understanding of the Mac file system, I'd guess
- +some+ innovative and good-hearted person should have come up with a
- utility which will scan the unused portions of the disk and flag the
- unusable sectors as bad in the allocation table (whatever it's called on
- a Mac disk). Question is, what? Where? How?
-
- Any other thoughts on this topic would be most valued. If this topic has
- already been beaten to death, I'd appreciate if some of the gurus could
- write up some sort of summary and mail it to me.
-
- Thanks, and pardon my unstructured prose,
