- I had a strange problem with my PowerBook 170 recently (System 7.0.1
- w/ System 7 Tuner 1.1.1, 8 MB RAM, 120 MB Hard Drive). When I tried
- to start it up, it would get as far as putting up the Finder's Menu
- Bar, then pause for about 1/2 second, then clear the Menu Bar and
- repeat. I tried disabling all of my INITs (w/ Extenstion Manager),
- but it didn't help the problem.
-
- Here's the weird part. I booted from a floppy, but when it got to the
- Finder, two of the hard drive's folder windows continually became
- selected and deselected rather quickly. I couldn't do anything,
- because the watch cursor was up (I tried Command-., and a few other
- keys and mouse clicks). Scary thing, not even being able to boot from
- a floppy.
-
- I tried rebuilding the desktop (which it let me do), but it didn't fix
- the problem.
-
- Then, I started up again with just the hard drive, and while it was in
- its Finder/No Finder cycle, I held down just the Option key. It then
- started up correctly.
-
-
- First question: Did anyone ever see this behavior with a PowerBook
- before?
-
- Second question: What does holding down just the Option key do when
- starting the Finder?
-
-
- Thanks,
