- I messed up on a previous post and gave the wrong impression, so here is
- a rewrite.
- I upgraded from 7.0.1 to 7.1 and discovered something interesting.
- If you just use the installer to move up to 7.1 (as opposed to a
- 'clean' install) the installer leaves the system fonts in the system FILE
- instead of removing them. As a result the system fonts are duplicated,
- which uses RAN like crazy. When I removed these fonts and rebooted I
- gained almost 100K of RAM back and 200MB of hard space from 7.0.dot had used.
- Also System 7.1 is designed so that NO fonts are suppossed to be IN the
- system file. Having fonts in the system file as well as the fonts folder
- not only uses more RAM then needed, but it also can cause printing problems
- and eventually system corruption since System 7.1 is NOT designed to have
- fonts in the system file.
- I suppect that this quirk in the installer is the reason that for some people
- 7.1 seems bigger in RAM and disk space then 7.0.dot. I also suppect that
- this is the reason that some people have had printing problems and system
- crashes.
- This from personal experience with the 'direct from Apple 7.0.X to 7.1
- upgrade US version' so the 6.0.X to 7.1 and other countries upgrades might
- not have this problem.
-
- In any case if you have upgraded to 7.1 and NOT used a 'clean'
- install CHECK YOUR SYSTEM FILE FOR FONTS. If you find any REMOVE THEM.
- It could save you grief in the long run.
