- I certainly do not agree with this line of thinking.
-
- PC's and Macs are about as similar as cars and pickup trucks. Both
- carry passengers and load, but they are not the same.
-
- Macs have one underlying message: everything is compatible and easy
- and good-looking.
-
- PC clones have one underlying message: they get the job done for less
- money.
-
- Note the new messages for 1993:
-
- Mac: we're getting cheaper
-
- Clones: we're getting better looking
-
- Consider the differences in the application program level:
- Mac PC
- one hard disk standard several hard disk standards
- one kind of video many kinds of video
- few kinds of printer many kinds of printer
- few kinds of network many kinds of network
- one kind of sound several kinds of sounds
-
- In order for a Mac to truly compete in Clone land, you'd have to add
- all this compatibility in the OS. Microsoft has been trying. It ain't
- easy.
-
- I don't see any reason to conclude that Apple can do a better job than
- Microsoft, nor do I see any reason to conclude that current Windows is
- as good as it will get.
-
- On the other hand, I don't see any reason to conclude that Windows
- will get much easier any time soon, nor do I see any reason why Apple
- can't underprice the clones.
-
- Recently, Macs have been getting cheaper, and clones have been getting
- better-looking. Does this mean that one will eliminate the other? Do
- "YO" mobiles (those cheapie pickup trucks) eliminate cars?
-
- The answer in either case is NOPE.
-
- Pretty soon, it's going to be an issue of personal preference. People
- will buy they computers they like. And Apple can't help but benefit by
- that.
-
- And, by the way, Quicktime for Windows (an Apple product) is out to
- developers NOW.
