  15. My brother is having a real problem with his Mac SE.  His
  16. daughter shut it off in the middle of the shutdown sequence a few
  17. weeks ago.  Since then, it does not recognize the hard disk as a
  18. startup disk when powered on.  He boots it from a floppy, then
  19. chooses restart from the options menu.  After doing this two or
  20. three times, the machine will recognize the hard disk and boot
  21. from it.

  23. The only other symptom that he knows is that he can't rebuild the
  24. desktop (though he's using system 6, and I gave him the way to do
  25. this using system 7; maybe my directions were wrong).

  27. Any ideas what it could be?  Please respond directly to me; I
