- The ethernet specification requires that each ethernet card be branded with
- a unique serial number, that can be read by the operating system. This has
- nothing to do with the IP address, it is at a lower level than TCP/IP.

- But, just because the spec requires it, I don't know for sure if vendors
- still follow this part of the spec.
