- Agreed, there should be no real problem running the hardware. And if you
- are running a Mac as a server or such, leave it on without worry. But if
- it is a personal machine used office hours, you might shutdown. I do
- recall long threads about the relative advantage of powering down disk
- drives at the end of the day versus avoiding cycling them on and off. If
- I recall correctly, the final average conclusion was that if the machine
- is unused afterhours, it is best to turn on in morning, leave on all day,
- and turn off when you leave. This limits you in a work office to about
- 250 power cycles per year, a fairly low number, while having the machine
- off 100 days of the year and 2/3 of the time the rest of the days. That
- means about a 25% duty! You could look at your hardware, determine the
- estimated lifetime versus total power cycles, and based on this estimate
- determine if it is best to follow the advice above. There is also the
- savings in electricity. (say 250W x 24 x 360 x 0.75 = 1620KWh)
