- I finally fixed my DataFrame XP40 drive and I'd like to share my
- experience for anyone else in a similar situation.
-
- The DataFrame XP40 consists of a power supply, an OMTI SMS SCSI
- to MFM controller, and a NEC5146H mechanism (615 cylinders, 8
- heads). My NEC5146H went bad and unfortunately no other manufac-
- turer I know of makes a drive with a similar mechanism. NEC still
- carries the drive but wants $1,005 for a 5.25", 40MB, 40ms MFM
- drive! (yes, ridiculous!).
-
- DriveSavers has bought the DataFrame support rights from SuperMac
- and will fix an DataFrame for $150 provided the mechanism isn't
- bad. If the mechanism is bad, they will remove everything inside
- and put in a Quantum 40MB drive and a new power supply for $249
- (not really worth it!)
-
- Both XP20's and XP40's have the same ROMs. I went shopping for a
- MFM mechanism which has 612/615 cylinders and 4 heads w/o any
- write precompensation or reduced write current. I bought a refur-
- bished MiniScribe 3425 for $69 (with a $10 trade-in for my
- NEC5146H) which worked fine but was very noisy, not very fast
- (85ms) and big (5.25" half-height).
-
- I exchanged the 3425 for a MiniScribe 8425 3.5" drive which was
- faster (65ms), much quiet and runs much cooler. I also bought a
- universal mounting kit because the DataFrame normally takes a
- 5.25" HH mechanism.
-
- To use any DataFrame drive with System 7, you need to download
- Manager7, a DataFrame specific version of Drive7. I formatted the
- DataFrame with Manager7 and everything works fine (except my XP40
- has now been demoted to an XP20). I also tried the Seagate ST-225
- mechanism, but it won't format (The Apple 20SC hard disk has a
- ST-225N inside so I thought I'd give it a try). I downloaded
- Manager7 from SuperMac's BBS, but I think it's available on Com-
- puServe as well.
-
- For the $69 I spent, I think it was worth the trouble. I learned
- a lot about IBM PC disk drives and storage devices in general.
- Please send me e-mail if you are in a similar situation and have
- any questions.
