  11. I finally fixed my DataFrame XP40 drive and I'd like to share  my
  12. experience for anyone else in a similar situation.

  14. The DataFrame XP40 consists of a power supply, an OMTI  SMS  SCSI
  15. to  MFM  controller,  and  a NEC5146H mechanism (615 cylinders, 8
  16. heads). My NEC5146H went bad and unfortunately no other  manufac-
  17. turer I know of makes a drive with a similar mechanism. NEC still
  18. carries the drive but wants $1,005 for a 5.25",  40MB,  40ms  MFM
  19. drive! (yes, ridiculous!).

  21. DriveSavers has bought the DataFrame support rights from SuperMac
  22. and  will  fix an DataFrame for $150 provided the mechanism isn't
  23. bad. If the mechanism is bad, they will remove everything  inside
  24. and  put  in a Quantum 40MB drive and a new power supply for $249
  25. (not really worth it!)

  27. Both XP20's and XP40's have the same ROMs. I went shopping for  a
  28. MFM  mechanism  which  has  612/615 cylinders and 4 heads w/o any
  29. write precompensation or reduced write current. I bought a refur-
  30. bished  MiniScribe  3425  for  $69  (with  a  $10 trade-in for my
  31. NEC5146H) which worked fine but was very  noisy,  not  very  fast
  32. (85ms) and big (5.25" half-height).

  34. I exchanged the 3425 for a MiniScribe 8425 3.5" drive  which  was
  35. faster  (65ms),  much quiet and runs much cooler. I also bought a
  36. universal mounting kit because the  DataFrame  normally  takes  a
  37. 5.25" HH mechanism.

  39. To use any DataFrame drive with System 7, you  need  to  download
  40. Manager7, a DataFrame specific version of Drive7. I formatted the
  41. DataFrame with Manager7 and everything works fine (except my XP40
  42. has now been demoted to an XP20). I also tried the Seagate ST-225
  43. mechanism, but it won't format (The Apple 20SC hard  disk  has  a
  44. ST-225N  inside  so  I  thought  I'd give it a try). I downloaded
  45. Manager7 from SuperMac's BBS, but I think it's available on  Com-
  46. puServe as well.

  48. For the $69 I spent, I think it was worth the trouble. I  learned
  49. a  lot  about  IBM PC disk drives and storage devices in general.
