- Now let me see if I can get this right! I run Ethernet and AppleTalk
- together nearly all the time. I run MacX, Nuntius, Eudora and all the
- other fun stuff over the Ethernet. I use the Appletalk for our server
- monitoring and direct LaserWriter access. We have a Gatorbox, so I could
- do everything via the Ethernet card. In this case I would switch from
- AppleTalk to EtherTalk and I would have to reboot. Many of our Macs here
- do not have an AppleTalk socket, EVERYONE has an Ethernet card, so those
- without the Appletalk socket run Ethertalk and they can do everything I
- can with AppleTalk.
-
- So, if you set up your network CP to LocalTalk-Built In, all applications
- wanting to use the AppleTalk protocols will be able to. If you configure
- MacTCP and install it, all applications wanting to use Ethernet will be
- able to (utilizing the TCP/IP protocol and its cohorts - all the Link
- Access Protocol extensions like Token Talk, SLIP, etc, will be able to)
-
- Note that you can configure the MacTCP CP to run over LocalTalk as well,
- in this case you do not need an Ethernet card. But to get to a TCP/IP
- Ethernet you would need a Gateway connecting your LocalTalk network to
- your Ethernet network (like the Cayman GatorBox). This would need to run
- a thing called DDP-IP (Datagram Delivery Protocol-Internet Protocol; in
- short, a program in the gateway that converts the TCP on LocalTalk to the
- TCP on the Ethernet).
-
- Hope this helps. I guess all I needed to say was "Right - it ain't true:
- :-)
-
- Happy New Year.
