  21. Seriously, though...
  22. the major difference between a 512K and a 512KE is that the E has
  23. Mac Plus roms.  The reason that this was done was so that you could
  24. use an 800K disk drive in the machine.  The 512K used the original
  25. 64K roms which only supported 400K floppy drives (following this?)
  26.  
  27. Any upgrade you are going to do is going to require new roms.
  28. You could buy a Mac Plus motherboard (and back half of the case)
  29. from some third party (i.e. Shreve, Pre-Owned Electronics, etc).

  31. There are other products available which will give you expandability
  32. in the form of simm slots (for up to 4 megs of ram) and a SCSI port,
  33. but these require that you have Mac Plus roms in your machine.
  34. They also require some amount of surgury.
  35.  
  36. Also, if the machine was used a lot, the power supply may be
  37. frail...if you're going to do an upgrade, you might wind up
  38. replacing that power supply soon afterwards.

  40. You'd probably want a new floppy drive (800K) as well.
  41.  
  42. When all is done, you could probably have bought a new machine
  43. for the same price.  Save your sanity -- buy a new machine.
