- I'm considering purchasing the following:
-
- Macintosh LC II 4/80 w/ 512K VRAM $1154
- Standard keyboard $ 85
- Apple 13" Hi-Res RGB monitor $ 450
- -----
- $1689
- Add California 8.25% sales tax $ 139.34
- -----
- Total $1828.34
-
- But I've also seen some people selling SE/30 5/40 (and other configurations)
- machines that look tempting.
-
- If someone could post a detailed comparison of the two, I'd appreciate it. I
- need it a.s.a.p.! (Store with above $1828 price closes in 5 hours (-: )
-
- Guesses on my part:
-
- SE/30
- For:
- ----
- Seems to be a better performer than the LC II?
- Has a full 32-bit external data path?
- Cheaper because of built-in video?
-
- Against:
- --------
- Isn't built-in video the same as a Classic, i.e. 512x342 9" monochrome?
- To get 4-bit or 8-bit color video, don't you have to install a NuBus card and
- drive an external 13" or 14" monitor?
-
- LC/II
- For:
- ----
- 4/80 w/ 512K VRAM configuration has more disk space, and can support 8-bit
- video built-in?
- If former is true, I'll get 8-bit video with an Apple 13" HiRes RGB monitor?
- (Or is it 4-bit unless I get a card?) I'm interested in color because my
- wife wants to learn Adobe Illustrator et al. - i.e., do graphics stuff.
- It's a brand new machine (-:
-
- Against:
- --------
- Has only a 16-bit external data path?
-
- I want this for my wife to do music (MIDI sequencing) and graphics like Adobe
- Illustrator. Cost is most definitely a factor. Let those considerations guide
- you.
-
- Also, if you know, what's this about an LC III and some other new Macs in Feb.?
- After having used Suns for the last 9 years, it's a bit pathetic (to me) that
- I have to think about buying a machine which isn't even as fast as a poor old
- 4 year old Sun-3/80 (20 MHz 68030). I would think 68040 processors would have
- been the norm for low-end Macs by now, but whadda I know? I'm just a
- workstation weenie ... (-:
-
- Quick followups appreciated ... thanks!
