-
- It's cheaper than PortShare Pro and can be compared with PortShare
- Lite (SRP $79 in USA). It's a rather nice product, but I have to avoid
- real comparison here - let some third party to do it.
-
- The only thing I HAVE to say - in the original posting
- ARA-compatibility was requested. As far as I know, only PortShare Pro
- cooperates with ARA. But may be we missed the new releases of Hayes
- Connect and other products.
- And, of course, PortShare Pro is compatible with LineShare, so you can
- use the single line for receiving incoming Fax, ARA/BBS/QuickMail etc
- calls and share the same line with network users.
-
- I don't know about competitors product, but we met the problem with
- FaxSTF, for example: inspite of the fact that FaxSTF releases the port
- when a communication program tries to open it, the port is opened all
- the time FaxSTF is waiting for incoming calls. So PortShare rejects
- all network requests, because it thinks that the port is busy.
-
- It does not happen with ARA: Apple used a rather complicated technique
- for "soft monitoring", and PortShare Pro (but not PortShare Lite)
- knows about that technique and uses it to check if the port is really
- busy, or it is just used for receiving incoming calls.
- But we don't know any other software that uses this technique, so the
- problem exists with all non-ARA servers listening to the line: fax,
- mail servers, BBS, etc.
-
- This problem is solved with the LineShare software, which implements
- the technique similiar to that used in ARA, but implemented in
- a different way: instead of tricks with a serial port, LineShare
- provides each server with its own "virtual" port. At the same time
- the "real port" remains visible and can be:
- a) used with comm programs like terminal emulators
- b) made shared with software like PortShare Pro (and maybe with
- competitors products).
-
- Hope this information helps.
-
- Note: Yes, I do work for Stalker.
