- My two bits on VersaTerm:
-
- It's a great program with a few limitations. Getting the bad stuff out of
- the way first...
- - only one window even for multiple sessions (e.g. telnet);
- this is telnet users who connect to multiple computers,
- and is why I presently use NCSA Telnet instead
- - no zmodem support (but does have kermit, xmodem and ymodem)
-
- The gripes aside, VersaTerm is superb, a paragon of fine Macintosh
- programming. It's one of the best terminal emulation programs available,
- AND a very good deal, as well. For less than $100 (mail-order) you get:
- - emulation for VT100, VT200, Tek 4014 and some DG terminal
- - the quality of the emulations is superb
- - very fast screen updates
- - comm. toolbox support (and includes lots of comm. tools)
- - lots of TCP/IP stuff, including MacTCP, FTP client (nearly as good as
- Fetch),
- FTP server (runs all the time, much nicer than NCSA's server but not
- as flexible as FTPd), an NTP time client and a time server
- - a good implementation of SLIP, that works with all MacTCP applications
- (by reports; I've not personally tried it)
- - easy to edit sessions menu (phone #s, telnet addresses, etc.)
- - nice macros, maybe not as fancy as Microphone's, but very useful & easy
- to use
- - robust -- one of the least buggy programs I've used
- - superb support. This is one of the best supported programs you can buy!
- VT was one of the first programs to support the background file xfers,
- comm. toolbox, system 7, 32 bit mode, you name it. And bugs (what few are
- found) get fixed FAST. Upgrades are $20, from any version, no matter how
- old.
-
- If you use Tektronix graphics, then consider VersaTerm PRO. This adds Tek
- 4105 graphics (nice), and displays and saves graphics as vectors instead of
- bitmaps (making cut/paste and printing much nicer). It also permits
- multiple graphics windows. Other than the nice Tek graphics enhancements
- (and remember that even normal VT has Tek 4014 emulation), VT PRO is
- identical to normal VT.
