- BeHierarchic was a little slow at startup, as it updated its data file,
- but I don't recall it taking that long, even on my LC, although I never
- used it on a PowerBook. If you've already got the latest/last version of
- BeHierarchic (1.0.5, I think), it might be worth looking at the commercial
- version which replaced it, called Kiwi Power Menus. In this, according
- to the blurb, 'the startup slowdown has simply been designed away'. I've
- been using KPM for about six months now, and I haven't had any
- problems with it. When it first came out, registered BeHierarchic users
- could buy it for $12, but I think that offer's expired now. The normal
- retail price, quoted in the introductory letter to registered users, is
- $39.95 (which I think's a touch on the expensive side - but as I only
- had to pay $12 I wasn't bothered). There is a demo version available,
- which I could send to you if you like; it's restricted in that it only
- expands the Control Panels folder, but I suppose you could dump a load
- of folder aliases in there temporarily and time the startup sequence, to
- see if it's worth buying for you. The main enhancements to KPM, apart
- from bug fixes and the performance improvement, were custom font/size in
- the Apple menu, plus 'DeepLevel' menus (ie. no practical limit to the
- number of nested folders); it also checks for recursive use of folder
- aliases, and tags them as 'Redundant Menus'. Kiwi's 'phone number is
- 1-800-321-5494.
