- 1) Ok, here's the situation. The system works fine for games. ie WC2 and
- T2029, and all the other goodies out there seem to work fine. The board
- also tests out just fine with test-sbp. Now, when I try to use vedit2
- and I choose the scan input option the entire system hangs. It also happens
- at the start of the talking parrot demo(where it waits for you to calibrate
- the "zero level" for the source. This is not a major problem, but I wonder
- what else is not working quite right. Oh, I just remembered, SoundRec in
- Win 3.1 does not work correctly either. It works sometimes, and other times
- it hangs the entire system. BTW, I checked, its not something obvious like
- the Adaptec and the SBPro trying to use the same irq or dma lines, they are
- different, plus diagnostics for both cards report a functional setup. If you
- have a functional system in vedit2 let me know. Another agravating "feature"
- with the Adaptec-SBPro combo is that every time the drive accesses(ie every
- 32k or so) a pop is heard in the recording. While this occurs with any drive
- to some extent, it is quite pronounced in my system. Can anyone confirm this?
- I have a theory that it is realated to the heavy DMA usage of the Adaptec
- controller, while this is good when I'm running UNIX, it sucks when I'm
- trying to get a reasonable sounding recording.
-
- 2) Anyone used the Gravis Ultrasound enough to provide me with some qualitative
- data on its performance(sound quality in digital stereo record mode is
- important, its not so great on the sbpro). Also, details on the fm chips
- which sound "not the same, but better" as quoted by someone in this group
- (or maybe it was the sb mailing list) a while back.
-
- 3) Anyone who has an SBpro can you comment on your ability to remove noise
- from the recordings. Where does it come from(I've yanked every card I could
- and still have noise), I guess it must be noise on the bus itself(impossible
- to get rid of without a very expensive power supply, or moving the sbpro to
- its own case), but I know there are people who have made recordings with not
- nearly as much hiss as I get(read alt.binaries.sounds.misc).
-
- 4) If you've read this far thank's for your time!
