  18. Well I recently bought myself an HP IV as an EARLY X-mas present but
  19. I'm waiting for delivery of it, directly from HP.  I don't know what
  20. the disks included with it will contain, but I managed to get a copy
  21. of the WIN 3.1 drivers for the HP 4/4M.  They support 600 dpi
  22. printing, RET and a whole bunch of other features.. Even though I
  23. don't have my printer yet, I found the drivers so grabbed them right
  24. away..  Below I'm including a copy of the README.TXT file included in
  25. the package.  Since it is supposed to be freely distributable, If
  26. anyone wants it, please let me know and If their is a large reuqest
  27. for it, I can post it in one of the binaries groups, post it to an ftp
  28. site, or if their are not many requests-maybe even mail it.  I would
  29. prefer an ftp site, such as hp's own "hpcsos.col.hp.com" in their /pub
  30. directory.  Let me know if anyone is interested.

  113. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS 3.1

  117. To install Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer driver version 
  118. 31.1.03 for Windows 3.1:

  120. NOTE:  If you intend to use HP Intellifont for Windows to
  121.     produce screen fonts for the Intellifont typefaces in the
  122.     HP LaserJet 4/4M, you must install Intellifont for Windows
  123.     BEFORE installing the printer driver.  Please refer to
  124.     the Intellifont for Windows instructions.
  125.  
  126. 1.  Choose the Control Panel from the Main Group in Program
  127.     Manager.
  128. 2.  Choose the Printers icon from the Control Panel window.
  129.     The Printers dialog box appears.
  130. 3.  Choose the Add button.
  131. 4.  From the List of Printers dialog box, select Install
  132.     Unlisted or Updated printer (first printer in list).
  133. 5.  Choose install.
  134. 6.  Insert the driver disk labeled HPPCL5E version 1.03 
  135.     into your flexible disk drive and specify the
  136.     WIN31DRV directory on your floppy disk to install
  137.     the Windows 3.1 driver.
  138. 7.  Highlight the "HP LaserJet 4/4M" line in the Add Unlisted
  139.     or Updated Printers dialog box and press [Enter].
  140. 8.  Choose Connect if the default port of LPT1 is incorrect.
  141. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the Ports list box
  142.     and press [Enter].
  143. 10. Choose Setup.
  144. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to 
  145.     reflect your printer's configuration.
  146. 12. Choose OK.
  147. 13. Choose Set as Default Printer if the LaserJet 4/4M is 
  148.     intended to be your default printer for all of your
  149.     Windows applications.

  158. The Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E Printer Driver version 31.1.03
  159. includes support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer and the 
  160. following new features:

  162. Support for 600 dpi Printer Resolution.
  163.     The user can switch between 300 and 600 dpi printer 
  164.     resolution via the switch in the setup dialog of the
  165.     driver. 
  166.  
  167. Support for Graphics Quality.
  168.     At 600 dpi mode in the LaserJet 4/4M the driver
  169.     supports graphics resolutions of 600, 300, and 150 dpi.
  170.     At 300 dpi mode the driver supports 300, 150, and 75 dpi.
  171.     The actual graphics resolution settings are denoted by
  172.     the descriptive terms of Low, Medium, and High rather 
  173.     than the actual dpi.

  175. Support for the TrueType typefaces.
  176.     All the resident TrueType typefaces in the HP
  177.     LaserJet 4/4M printer are supported.  Other TrueType 
  178.     typefaces are supported by building outlines from
  179.     the typeface and downloading the characters needed on the
  180.     fly.  All of the internal TrueType typefaces in the HP
  181.     LaserJet 4/4M printer are supported in the 19U symbol set
  182.     with the exception of Wingdings in L$ and Symbol in AS.

  184.     Hewlett-Packard has made the TrueType format screen
  185.     fonts available for the 35 Intellifont format typefaces
  186.     in LaserJet 4/4M.  These screen fonts are available through
  187.     your local Hewlett-Packard dealer and are not included in 
  188.     this package.  TrueType equivalent screen fonts allow for a 
  189.     more closely integrated Windows 3.1 solution.

  191. Support for the internal Intellifont typefaces.
  192.     All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet 
  193.     4/4M printer are supported in the 19U symbol set.  To obtain
  194.     WYSIWYG results, use HP Intellifont which supports
  195.     on-the-fly screen fonts to match your printer fonts in
  196.     Windows 3.1.

  198. Support for HP-GL/2
  199.     Support for HP-GL/2 is in version 1.03.  Under the Options
  200.     Dialog in the Printer Setup, a new option of "Graphics 
  201.     Mode" is available.  Two options are present:  HP-GL/2 or
  202.     Raster.  The first choice enables HP-GL/2 which will 
  203.     increase print performance but may possibly cause 21 Print 
  204.     Overruns in some applications. The second choice disables 
  205.     HP-GL/2 and uses raster only.  The default for Graphics Mode 
  206.     is HP-GL/2.
  207.     If you do encounter print difficulties in the default
  208.     Graphics Mode, it is recommended that you change the 
  209.     mode to Raster and try your print job again.  Additional
  210.     information on this topic may be found in the help files
  211.     that accompany this driver.  Choose Help from the driver
  212.     dialog screens or the HP font installer screens to access 
  213.     the HELP information.

  215. Dialog Support for Resolution Enhancement Technology
  216.     Another feature added to the Option Dialog is the
  217.     Resolution Enhancement technology box.  The options here
  218.     are:  Printer Default, Light, Medium, Dark, and Off.
