- Alright, here's a good one. I am helping a friend set up his new 486SX33
- system. AMI Bios / Taiwan board. Everything seemed to be working fine
- until I tried to boot off the 5 1/4" drive to setup the new HDD. It won't
- read 1.2 Mb disks! I tried everything. I tried all sorts of jumper combinations
- on the ESDI Multi I/O board and on the motherboard. The docs which came
- with the motherboard don't mention operating with a 33 MHz SX chip but by
- comparisons with the jumper settings for the 25SX and 33DX with 50 and 33 MHz
- oscillators, I figured out which jumpers halved the oscillator speed and
- which ones were for SX vs. DX vs. SX with a co-processor. I then tough it
- might be the drive so I incrementally replaced the drive, the cable, and the
- controller with the drive, cable, and controller from my home machine. IT
- GAVE ME THE SAME RESULTS. (The 1.2 Mb FDD only read 360K floppies - and will
- even boot from them! - but NOT 1.2). So, I'm bringing the motherboard and
- controller back tommorow but I'm still puzzled by the problem.
-
- What could cause these, obviously OK controllers and drives, to act like this?
-
- Inquiring minds want to know!
