  15. My brother-in-law was given a Toshiba T3100 portable computer that appears to
  16. have some problems with its built-in display.  However, aside from what appears
  17. to be a bad CMOS-backup battery, the system seems to run just fine. (ie, the
  18. screen looks garbled in some locations and the system boots up into what looks
  19. to be some sort of setup program, but by pressing F1 and accepting the "default"
  20. config the system starts up ok)

  22. I was thinking if the problem is only with the battery and the screen that I
  23. could get a replacement battery by mail-order and plug a display into the port
  24. labeled "RGB" on the back and he'd have a decent desktop system (for things
  25. like light wordproc, quicken, etc, etc.)

  27. The main problem here though is that the system only came with a power cord and
  28. a carrying case (in other words, no documentation)

  30. I tried plugging a CGA monitor into the back of the machine, I get no picture.
  31. Is there some variant of the MODE command required to enable the external "RGB"
  32. port?

  34. Could somebody give me a simple rundown on this machine's "stock" configuration?

  36. It appears to have a 10 or 20MB internal hard drive (hard to tell exact size as
  37. display is garbled), a 3.5" floppy drive (cannot tell if 1.4MB or 720K) and
  38. 640K RAM.

  40. Is this machine based on a '286 or a '8088?

  42. How expandable is it memory or diskwise without using the half-card slot
  43. built in? (In other words, if it is a 286, can I expand past 640K on the
  44. motherboard, if so what kind of chips/simms do I need and are the internal
  45. floppy/hd Toshiba proprietary or can I put a larger drive of either type in
  46. there with minor problems?)

  48. There is a 4-switch DIP-pack on the back of the machine, what do these switches
  49. control?

  51. There is a switch next to a DIN plug on the left side of the case labeled
  52. A/B/Prt, what does this switch do?

  54. Is there a relatively cost-effective upgrade for this machine to one of the
  55. newer processors (ie 386 or 386sx?)

  57. If I can upgrade this system's memory and disk space, would it be possible/
  58. worthwhile to run Windows 3.1 and/or generic MS-DOS 5.x on this system, or does
  59. it require a DOS specifically from Toshiba? (The thing seems to be running a
  60. variant of v2.11, which makes me tend to believe this thing has a 10MB HD, 8088
  61. 640K RAM, Internal CGA video and a 720K 3.5" floppy which doesn't bode well
  62. for doing these kinds of things without a bunch of expensive upgrades... :-(

  65. Are there any reputable, reasonably-priced mail-order houses that carry things
  66. like replacement gas-plasma displays, floppy drives, batteries, etc. for
  67. Toshiba hardware?

  70. to see if I can get some hardcopy docs on this beastie?
