- I'm soliciting opinions on the best choice for a 2nd IDE drive in the 120-
- 170 MB range. This is for a 486/25DX home computer heavily used for games. My
- current drive is a 120 MB Conners 30104 (H?). I'm interested in
- compatibility with the above as master drive, reliability, transfer
- rate/access time, and noise level in roughly that order. My AMI BIOS is
- dated mid '91.
- For the record I get ~498kb/sec transfer as measured by PC Mag Bench 7.0,
- and ~18-19ms access time on the Conners using the $20 IDE interface from
- HDI.
-
- Drives of interest are:
- Western Digital WD280A, WD2120, or 2170
- Conner CP30104, or CP30174
- Maxtor MX7120
-
- The Western Digital drives are tempting since HDI throws in Stacker (
- version 2.0?) with the deal. I've heard some grumbling about noise
- regarding these drives. I've also read complaints about Maxtor and Conners
- drives being unhappy as master/slave.
-
- Thanks very much for your advice and nethelp, Ron Sidwell
-
- P.S. Quietest drive I've ever had was my old Mitsubishi 60Mb RLL.
