- The first of the three units (in August 1991) wouldn't stop running
- self-destructively by itself. The power transformer ended up all dark
- and wrinkled, and a number of parts plus the inside of the case showed
- serious thermal injury. I disconnected the battery stack and shipped
- it back under warranty without seeing an ultimate conclusion.
-
- When the subsequent units failed, I seriously began to wonder what
- would've happened if all the popping, hissing, smoke, and orange glows
- were allowed to continue in our offices. If the parking lot scene had
- actually resulted in a fire, then I really thought other BC500 users
- might want to know about the hazard. As it happens, I was relieved to
- see that there was lots of smoke but no fire. In this case, there
- wouldn't have been any damage except that the employees would have
- surely called the fire department and caused a big scene.
-
- I was pleased to see that Tripplite had apparently updated the
- subsequent units such that the smoky failure only goes on for a minute
- or so and then just stops gracefully.

- The 3 units appear to be from two different batches and as mentioned
- above, the later two failed more gracefully than the first.
-
- Anyway, I find his post inflamatory ;-} and

- One hundred percent of a 3 unit sample failed with clouds of smoke.
- Plus now I've gotten 'hey, that happened to me' e-mail. I think
- everyone just takes it for granted that they buy a UPS, and it will
- silently and reliably be a white knight protecting their precious
- computer and its data. Well, reality sure hit me in the face with
- clouds of smoke.
-
- I have a Tripplite SB1000b at my feet here at home, and another at the
- radio station plus two older BC750's. I'm sure they'll be fine.
- However, the new BC500 design may have a serious problem. There isn't
- a Consumer's Report UPS article yet, so all we can do is swap anecdotes
- like this. This is how the world finds out about inflamatory 1984
- Pontiac Fieros, etc., etc..
