- When I open a PC, I either pop out the mains cable at the back
- to prevent a mains shock; or leave it in but switch the power off at the
- mains socket. This way (in the UK, anyway) the appliance is still grounded,
- so any static I add to the system is drained away without damaging the
- chips.
-
- I don't know about massive shocks from capacitors in the PC. Sounds
- like BS to me, but I wouldn't stake my life on it.
-
- My fan at home developed a nasty noise recently, so I unplugged the
- mains cable at the back, unscrewed the power supply, and squirted a drop
- of WD40 onto the fan bearings. The noise was gone when I put it back
- together, but disassembling and reassembling it may have changed the balance
- enough to stop the vibration on its own. It's been going OK for a few weeks
- now, so I'm happy 9-)
-
- Mind, I take no responsibility for anyone else who causes massive
- damage to themselves / their PC doing these things.
