  13. I am in the process of buying a 486SX based machine. Looking for 
  14. graphics accelerators has me a little confused. I haven't been able 
  15. to get a complete answer to a few of my questions.

  17. I would like to have 16/256 colors @ 1024x768 resolution. The cards i 
  18. have looked at are Win 7 VGA, Diamond Speedstar 24x and the Orchid 1280.
  19. All are advertised as being "windows accelerators". My questions are:

  21.     What exactly is "windows acceleration"? Or put differently, 
  22.      what part of windows environment do they accelerate.
  23.     Do these cards contain a seperate processor? If yes, how are
  24.      they different from generic graphics co-processor card.
  25.     Will other apps see an improved performance too? I am not 
  26.      thinking of fancy graphics apps, but simple things like
  27.      graph drawings in Quicken or the paint program that comes w/ 
  28.      Windows, etc.
