- On Dec. 26th, I happened into the Egghead Software in Houston, while
- visiting my folks for Christmas. Much to my surprise, I found World Circuit
- in a big stack, on the floor. Needless to say, waited in line about 15
- minutes, bought the thing, drove home to Denton the next day and proceeded
- to load the thing up (after enduring a recalcitrant monitor for about 45
- long, agonizing minutes). The good news is that it plays as good as it
- looks. I haven't moved up to pro yet but on the amateur level, it is a lot
- of fun. So far, no lockups, and no problems. They offer a couple of really
- neat bells and whistles that the Amiga version lacked. First off, while you
- still have the same goofy names to start up with (even though the helmets
- are correct), you can set the system up to load the corrected names when the
- game boots. You can also set all sorts of other parameters - such as having
- a wet race - complete with blinding spray! Fun, Fun, Fun. Another gee-
- gaw is pressing the 'O' (not zero) key while the sim is running... It gives
- you the percentage of processor activity at its current level. Nice
- touch that lets you customize your setup to the optimal level for speed
- and graphics. The bad news is the sound and the interminable number of
- menu screens. I got spoiled with the high quality of the Amiga sound. The
- PC sound (I am using a SoundBlaster (basic one)) is good in the
- representation of the engine - certainly better than any other PC racing
- game but does not have that 'edge' that a racing motor sound has. The
- sounds from outside the car as it passes by, etc. are rather poor - when
- they work - mine don't always. Also, the sound of screeching tires is just
- not up to scratch even when compared to Indy 500. These may be different
- with a SB Pro or a Roland. I would be interested to know the answer to
- that.
-
- Nonetheless, if you are a racing fan, run, don't walk, down to your nearest
- software store and get this game. It is really good. The 3d effect of the
- tracks is great, the detail is there, just the sound needs a little work.
- They also have this really interesting (so-called because I don't know if I
- like it yet or not - some parts I do and others I don't) computer
- animation. The beginning is really cool. The victory celebrations are less
- so.
-
- Sorry this has gotten so long - thought you guys would like to know. BTW, a
- visit to Software,Etc., Comp USA, Computer City, and Electronics Boutique
- yesterday (Dec 28th) did not turn up this game - so far I have only seen it
- at Egghead. Good luck to all.
