- Return it, unopened, and get your money back. If you want a space
- combat game, the Wing Commander series by Origin is far superior.
-
- Mantis is just not a fun game. All missions are the same:"There are N
- enemy ships at this location. Go there and destroy them." After
- launch, you press a key that takes you to the combat area. Then you
- press a key that engages the nearest enemy. When the enemy comes
- within range, you press a key to launch one or more missiles. The
- ship's gun is worthless. Iterate as necessary for all enemy ships.
- When finished, you press another key to return to base. This is not
- really a space dogfight game.
-
- They make missions harder by simply adding more ships. The enemy AI
- is pretty poor. All the enemy does is launch missiles at you when you
- come into their range. There are few ship improvements you can
- acquire. About all that improves during the game is the selection of
- available missiles.
-
- The game is both boring and frustrating. If you run out of missiles
- and ammo during a battle, or if your ship is so badly damaged that you
- must eject, the game quickly goes down a losing path. For example, if
- you eject more than 2 or 3 times, you are kicked out of the service
- and the game ends. Add to this a few rather sexist animated scenes
- between missions and speech that doesn't add much to the game and you
- have a big zero.
-
- If you are looking for a space flight simulator, do purchase Wing
- Commander. This is a wildly popular game that Mantis tried and failed
- to copy. If you have played Wing Commander, consider Gunship 2000, a
- helicopter simulator. Falcon 3.0 is about the best flight simulator
- around, but it may be too large and complex for kids in the 10 to 13
- year range. < Zipping up flame retardant suit B-) >
