- To add some actual numbers to our speculation, I recently looked at the Top
- 100 for each of the last three Computer Game Review magazines (#102, #101,
- and #100). Granted, CGW is not UseNet, but I don't have the patience to
- analyze over a thousands posts. Besides, CGW already divides games into
- several categories which are close to the ones we have been considering.
-
- Their categories are:
-
- Adventure (AD)
- [Computer] Role Playing Games (RP)
- [Flight] Simulations (SI)
- Strategy (ST)
- War Games (WG)
- Action (AC)
- Sports (SP)
-
- And now, the numbers:
-
- | #102 #101 #100
- ---+-------------------
- AD | 21 20 20
- RP | 21 23 20
- SI | 14 14 14
- ST | 21 24 23
- WG | 14 12 13
- AC | 10 11 10
- SP | 8 8 8
-
- There is some overlap, most notably between ST and WG. The only AD/RP
- overlap is Hero's Quest, by the way. Interestingly, CGW calls Lemmings an
- Action game (I consider it more Strategy).
-
- Anway, what does this all mean? Well, obviously, AD and RP, together or
- separately, deserve a group. I think separately, as they are well enough
- defined to be different, and many people like one but can't stand the other
- (for example me <grin>).
-
- SI is kind of small, but the games included in that rubric often take up a
- lot of discussion (e.g. Falcon 3.0, Aces, Red Baron). So it ought to get a
- group.
-
- WG is surprisingly big. Combined with ST it is very big! But then again,
- my hunch is that these games will not have a huge number of postings. So
- perhaps they can all go in one group?
-
- AC and SP are small, AC smaller than I had expected. Maybe they would make
- good categories for a .misc group?
-
- Synthesizing all that, we have....
-
- .announce
- .advocacy
- .flightsim (SI)
- .strategy (WG and ST)
- .adventure (AD)
- .crpg (RP)
- .misc (SP and AC)
-
- Seven groups, two of which could split again later, one of which is
- moderated and very low traffic, and one of which is mostly useless
- (.advocacy - not to mention being low traffic to boot). This does seem to
- be a lot of groups. The only way I can see to cut it down would be to
- combine .adventure and .crpg, throw .strategy in .misc, and eliminate
- .announce and .advocacy. But then again that may be too minimalist.
-
- Well, I look forward to the "poll" results later in January. Hopefully if
- we gather enough data beforehand, we can make a clean, well thought out
- split which will satisfy many people, and allow for later "growth" (UseNet
- seems to grow like some insiduous cancer <grin>).
-
- One last comment: I would suggest postponing any "fomal" stuff like a
- Request for Discussion until late January, as many people are on vacation
- (including the moderator of news.announce.newgroups).
