- It means it's been compressed with the program "compress".
- Usually programs that have been compressed with "compress" have been done
- with "tar" first.
- Tar put several files into one file, as compress can only compress the one
- file, it doesn't group a few files into one archive.
- Tar does no compression, hence then putting the files through compress.

- If you can't find compress on it's own, then you'll find it in
- one of the uucp archives (either hermes or mercury (rodneys uucp modules))
