  18. It means it's been compressed with the program "compress".
  19.  Usually programs that have been compressed with "compress" have been done
  20.  with "tar" first.
  21. Tar put several files into one file, as compress can only compress the one
  22.  file, it doesn't group a few files into one archive.
  23. Tar does no compression, hence then putting the files through compress.

  25. The above answer is based on my personal experience only, and may be wrong.

  27. If you can't find compress on it's own, then you'll find it in
  28.  one of the uucp archives (either hermes or mercury (rodneys uucp modules))
