-
- well, we're actually having a minor terminology quibble here.
-
- Minidisc and DCC do not employ lossy compression on the audio signal in the
- audio *domain*, they employ lossy compression in the digital domain, by
- applying Fletcher-Munson type audability curves to the incoming signal, then
- tossing bits if they fall out of bounds (DCC uses PASC, MD uses ATRAC). audio
- can be compressed in the audio domain (obviously - its done all the time in the
- recording studio), but that won't reduce the raw digital data stream like
- digital compression can (obviously again - think of it as .ZIPing or .LHARCing
- the data [an imperfect metaphor however]).
-
- Sony does intend to introduce minidisc for computer data storage at some point
- in the future - it will assuredly *not* feed the incoming computer data
- through a Fletcher-Munson curve! %^)
