- John,
-
- The Kickstart has nothing to do with the memory usage. Our problem is
- that in order to properly mirror memory, you needs LOTS of memory to be
- able to use 32 bit for the MAC system memory.
-
- The Memory in the A3000/4000's is done backwards. If you install 4 megs
- of memory on the motherboard, it gets placed from $07C00000 to $07FFFFFF.
- Most accelerators would start at offset $0 (in this case $07000000)
- instead of working downwards. The reason for Commodore doing this was
- the simplicity of adding SuperKickStart images. The images get placed in
- the last 512K of the memory ($07F80000) making it simple for the MMU
- table to be setup. Because memory must mirrored (to take care of the MAC
- II/x/cx's 32 bit 'dirty' problem), the first 4 megs (in the upper-most
- memory locations) conflicts with other I/O space and chip memory, thus it
- can not be used. If you have 8 megs of 32 bit memory, you can use
- 1.5 megs of it for the MAC's system memory. If you have 12 megs of 32
- bit memory, you can use 3.5 megs of it and 16 megs of 32 bit memory gets
- you about 7.5 megs of system memory.
-
- I can use 7.5 megs on my VXL*30 because non of the memory conflicts with
- anything else in the system (any memory mapped into the auto-config area
- will not conflict).
-
- The MAC IIci/si emulation module does not have any memory
- requirements/restrictions. We are hoping to have it out by mid-Jan.
-
- The AmigaDOS device support seems to be working fine on ALL systems.
- There have been NO reported problems, bugs, or quirks. :-)
