- Well, as promised, I conducted some more experiments on the HP4 with several
- paper types, and while I was at it decided to measure the actual leading
- edge curl at the top of the page. Also I did some measurements on
- the Apple LaserWriter II and QMS-810 with NXP 20lb. The paper curl
- results are...
-
- 1) Apple LaserWriter II with NXP 20lb 1/8"
- 2) HP LJ4 with MCS 24lb 3/16"
- 3) QMS-810 with NXP 20lb 1/2"
- 4) HP LJ4 with NXP 20lb 7/16"
- 5) HP LJ4 with Willcopy 20lb 9/16"
- 6) HP LJ4 with MCS 20lb 1"
- 7) HP LJ IIIp with Willcopy 20lb 1 to 1 1/2" (an estimate)
- 7) HP LJ IIp with Willcopy 20lb 1 1/2 to 2" (an estimate)
-
- Again, the Apple LaserWriter II showed the least amount of curl at the
- top of the page with 1/8", and the HP LJ4 curl ranged from 3/16" to 1"
- depending on the paper type, (a factor of 4 difference). I suppose
- it was unfortunate that the initial paper I had bought for the LJ4 was
- the MCS 20lb because that had the greatest curl. I'll be switching
- to the MCS 24lb, or some other 24lb since it's the closest to the Apple
- curl level.
-
- I would like to have done some measurements on the HP LJ IIp and IIIp
- to compare with, but carrying around a ruler in Fry's Electronics and then
- surreptitiously measuring paper would have attracted too many salesdroids.
- But, from memory, the HP IIp which has the most curl of any printer,
- I would estimate at 1 1/2 to 2" in a symmetrical bow with both ends
- up in the air.
-
- In conclusion, there is substantial variability in LJ4 paper curl depending
- on paper selection, and a new owner will probably have to change from
- their current favorite paper.
-
- Disclaimer: I work for neither HP, nor Apple, nor Frys, nor any paper
- companies. I'm just a cold-war relic software engineer at Hughes Aircraft.
