- Ok, ive gotten pretty advanced about getting *ALL* of my system on and off
- tape. But I still have a big problem. If you erase the entire system, even
- leaving the boot sector intact (ie, just delete all subtrees of root), then
- restore it to be identical to the way it was before, it will not boot.
- I tried the experiment after having dual booted out of os/2 back to dos,
- then save entire disk, erase and restore. It *looks* identical.
- I'm not a DOS expert. Are they relying on a special arrangement (position) of
- the system files to accomplish the boot ?
- Do any of you all know of a SCSI based backup solution that will *REALLY*
- backup the drive (like an IMAGE backup).
- As it is now, if your disk gets totally roached, and you must bring it
- completely back from the dead, you must:
-
- 1. Reformat.
-
- 2. Restore the entire volume.
-
- 3. "Rip" out the os directories and files to insure
- a clean install (for instance, the os/2 SP would not
- install properly over anything but a "clean" GA, and
- Windows NT refuses to write over itself AT ALL.
- ever try to get rid of all os/2 files ? Try it when
- youve just lost your disk and are mad).
-
- 4. Reinstall the operating system(s) (which for me
- means Dos, WIN NT, OS/2 GA followed by SP or about
- 1 - 2 hours work).
-
- There has to be a better way !
