- Microsoft added features to AT&T Version 7 UNIX (record locking) and sold
- the product under the name Xenix (at that time vendors could not use the
- name UNIX in thier product name). This was a product of MS BEFORE the PC
- and before DOS. Microsoft sold this in "source" form to various hardware
- vendors (Altos, Radio Shack, ...). SCO came along several years later,
- bought the "source" form and resold binaries. A real cash cow for MS.
-
- In 1989 (?) AT&T said if you meet certian standards, you could use the name
- UNIX in the product name. Amoung those standards were System V compliant.
- SCO switched to UNIX and announced they would no longer update Xenix.
- -- Cash cow dies--
- Microsoft buys 20% of SCO to get a piece of the action.
