  24. This is off topic, but to name one that is damn close to a monopoly, 
  25. try the DuBeers Diamond Cartel.  Another that came very close was INCO 
  26. due to the large quantity of nickel in Sudbury, ON.  There have also 
  27. been national monopolies, such as silk in China in the early middle 
  28. ages, which were NOT created by government, but permitted to 
  29. continue, or actively supported, by the government AFTER their 
  30. creation.  Lets DROP this side-issue.
