- IBM ANNOUNCES EXTENSIVE BETA PROGRAM FOR OS/2 2.1
-
- WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., December 21 . . . IBM Personal Software
- Products today announced an extensive beta release for OS/2* 2.1,
- the company's advanced 32-bit operating system for Intel-based
- personal computers. The new beta program will include more than
- 5,000 user sites, independent software vendors and independent
- hardware manufacturers.
- "Based on the valuable customer feedback we received from
- previous beta releases of OS/2, we've decided to continue the
- wide availability beta program. Customer feedback has been a
- hallmark of the OS/2 development process," says Lee Reiswig,
- president, IBM Personal Software Products division. "The second
- release of our 32-bit operating system shows IBM's commitment and
- development strength. As a result, we are the first Intel-based
- operating system developer to deliver the power of 32-bit
- software on a wide-scale basis."
- The OS/2 2.1 beta provides support for OS/2, Windows* 3.1 and
- DOS applications running concurrently on a single display.
- Additional drivers include 256-color XGA and Super Video Graphics
- Adapters (SVGA) for brighter and sharper screen displays,
- high-speed printers and popular CD-ROM drives. Other features
- include a new high-performance 32-bit graphics engine, a fax
- mini-application (applet), support for Advanced Power Management
- (APM) to extend the battery life of notebook computers and
- Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA)
- specifications -- the new standard for credit card-sized hardware
- options. Also included are enhanced enabling code for pen- and
- speech-based systems as well as the inclusion of OS/2 multimedia
- extensions to improve the use of audio in computers.

-
- The Press Release was ***NOT*** correct. There is no intention to
- have downloading of the beta code on *either* this OS2BBS or CompuServe.
- At 29 diskette images, it is not practical to attempt to download this
- code.
-
- What the Press Release *should* have said, is that support will be
- provided on *both* this OS2BBS and on CompuServe. One of the things
- that I plan to do is to have the forum OS2GRWIN change it's name to
- OS2BETA CFORUM to support this shipment of beta code. This will 'match'
- an internal OS2BETA FORUM that we have created for support of IBM'ers
- using the beta code.
