- I have a small window problem.
- My system is a 486 dx 33 with 16 megs of ram. Windows 3.1 and normally
- have a BBS running in the background at 9600 baud.
-
- With that, I can still go to dos and play my favorite game, Wing Commnder 2,
- off my Sound Blaster pro CD-rom with now loss of speed, compared to my
- 386 sx I use to run with no windows nor anything runing anywhere. the game is
- still faster. Now the music messes up alittle but I think thats due to
- origins sound driver not being compatable with a 486.
-
- Anyway my problem is this. certain other games, when playing sounds though
- the sound blaster slow everything to a crawl and most others don't.
- Case in point: Sierra's new game, The Increatable Machine.
- Works great untill the fan starts.
- 1. In windows, I was running my usual set up, and the fan started and
- everything about forzen and my bbs lost carrier.
- 2. I exit windows, play the game, fan starts, everything runs smooth as
- silk. Ah-ha! must be the bbs!
- 3. I run it from windows with nothing else running, and exclusive turned on.
- when the fan starts, everything freezes. So, I begin to think. (that hurts too!
- ) I run may games with digital sound affects and complete music with no
- slow down at all even with people downloading in the back ground. So I
- decide that maybe its just to much math for the computer to compute the
- physics of wind and run window. So I sigh, and decide to run the program
- only in dos, having to take down my BBS. :(
- 4. Few days latter, I'm over at my Dads and he just got the game, and
- runs it from windows and with a 486 sx-4 megs of ram and a the exact same
- video card, there is NO slow up! Now I'm confused. So I think for awhile again,
- and it dawns on me that he has no sound card. So I run back home, configer
- T.I.M. to play through the PC speaker, and guess what? Runs fine.
- And TIM really only uses the adlib abilities of my Sound Blaster pro. So what
- gives?
-
- Does anyone have any suggestions out there? (besides os/2 which is at the
- moment not able to use a good part of my hardware. maybe with 2.1..)
-
- Thanks in advance..
