- There was no question that AT&T was a natural mononpoly, that's why they
- were heavily regulated by state and federal goverments. They were broken
- up because the market had been entered by a group of competitors like
- MCI that were sucking the cream off the top by providing business services.
- The breakup was as much to benefit of AT&T and the government as it was
- to us poor hapless consumers.

- In a regulated monopoly there is a great incentive to invest in new technology
- because your profit is normally based on your capital investment. That's one of
- the big problems with power utilities. In most states, they aren't rewarded
- for conservation programs, but they are reward for building additional
- capacity.
