  16. Disk compression utilities work as well with GEOS as they work with any 
  17. other software.  Unfortunately, it's relatively simple to make SSTOR,
  18. for example, puke.  [This is why I don't use it.]

  20. When you set up SSTOR, it expects to actually achieve the degree of
  21. compression you specify.  So, if you have a 50mb drive, and tell it to
  22. use 2x compression, it thinks it has 100mb.

  24. What would happen, though, if you really only got 1.5x compression?
  25. Bingo.  You get 75mb worth of stuff onto the drive (compressed 1.5x to
  26. fit in a 50mb space), and SSTOR realizes that even though it's got 25mb
  27. of "logical drive" left, the _physical_ drive is full.

  29. Its method of dealing with this is simple - mark the remaining 25mb as
  30. bad blocks.  So, wham-o, you've got a drive that's not only full, but
  31. has 25mb worth of disk errors.  Of course, the _physical_ drive doesn't
  32. have 25mb worth of disk errors, but SSTOR isn't looking at that. :)

  36. "GeoWorks Ensemble should run with disk compression programs, such as 
  37.  Stacker or DoubleDisk, on most computer systems.  However, like disk
  38.  caches, disk compression programs place heavy demands on your system -
  39.  demands that may lead to system errors or even damaged files.

  41. "If you encounter problems using GeoWorks Ensemble on a system with a
  42.  disk compression program, try installing it on a non-compressed disk.
  43.  If that doesn't work, try using GeoWorks Ensemble without the disk-
  44.  compression software loaded."

  46. If possible, you may want to consider installing GEOS in a non-SSTOR'd
  47. directory or logical drive, and using a compressed directory or drive
  48. for data files.  Most data files created by GeoDraw will compress
  49. nicely, but it's safer to leave your system files uncompressed (IMO).
