- For those that use it, version 4 of the XT hard disk controller driver is
- available (or will be) on tsx-11.mit.edu and nic.funet.fi.
-
- This driver essentially allows you to use XT style (8 bit) hard disk
- controllers under Linux. These controllers, while slow, have the advantage
- of using a separate set of IO ports and a different IRQ to normal AT style
- (or IDE) disk controllers, allowing them to be used in conjunction with
- them. This means that you can have up to 4 drives in one machine (however,
- you can only access all four under Linux).
-
- If you have an old 8 bit controller and some old disk gathering dust, I'd
- appreciate it if you'd give my driver a go (and gain some disk space to
- boot <grin>) and let me know how it works (or not <grin>) for you.
-
- The changes to this version should reduce the amount of CPU time absorbed
- by the driver and should allow it to work properly with Seagate ST11R/M
- controllers.
-
- Pat -- Have a day!
