- In my ongoing attempts to get XFree 1.1 running on my 386DX/25MHz Linux .99
- box with Hedaka SVGA card (T8900B ... not C, 1024K ram) I managed to get a
- 800x600 monochrome screen up and running (using the Xconfig posted a while
- ago). Any (virtual) screen with a resolution higher than 800x600 exits with
- the error:
-
- VGA2: Too little memory for virtual resolution
-
- which, I guess, can be explained by the preceeding notice:
-
- VGA2: tvga8900 (mem: 1024k (using 64k) numclocks: 8)
- ^^^^^^^^^
- And indeed; making a "Virtual 800 655" screen (: 32 bytes short of 64k)
- still works while anything over that exits with the mentioned error.
- Bummer ... I want at least 1024x768 (should look good on a 20" Micro-
- Vitek monitor)!
-
- When I try to run 256 color X the server exits with the error:
-
- Trident driver only supports TVGA8900C
-
- Which leaves me with (at least) two questions:
-
- 1. why won't monochrome X allow me to use more than 64k
- display memory so that I can use screens of higher
- resolutions than 800x600?
-
- 2. why does the 256 color Trident display driver only support
- T8900C chips? What's this annoying difference between the
- T8900B and C?
-
- All info appreciated. Also; I have some info on the Trident 8900 chips
- from a guy who ones wrote a driver for it in Turbo Pascal. The maintainer
- of the Trident driver sources might want to look at that in case she/he
- has problems getting the chip's specs from Trident.
-
- I even tried specifying different "chipset"s in the Xconfig file and got
- some mixed results with "pvga1": there definitely _is_ color and the
- cursor is there (I even managed to shutdown the server by selection of
- the "Exit" item from the menu) but the screen flickers as hell and the
- complete system hangs when the server exits.
-
- -- Rob ... and probably a lot of others who are having the same
- problems with XFree and the Trident cards ...
