- Gordon,
-
- Actually, Xgopher does not itself do the ftp (no clients do that I know of).
- It is the server that performs the ftp.
-
- For ftp-ing files, the server looks at their extension and if it is one
- of a certain set, assigns a best-guess gopher item type to the file.
- Any ".gif" file is usually identified by the server as type 'I', and
- thus known to Xgopher as an image type. If you are doing the ftp
- through an old server it may not be smart about images -- try going
- through a server that you suspect is current (e.g., umn!).
-
- And, you definitely SHOULD be able to fool Xgopher into things! It
- is a feature that you can enter any item type you want on the "Enter
- Gopher Item" panel and try different ways to access data. This is
- actually one way to fool the server indirectly also (for ftp's), since
- its type assignment is just best-guess as I mentioned above.
