  28. Actually, Xgopher does not itself do the ftp (no clients do that I know of).
  29. It is the server that performs the ftp.

  31. For ftp-ing files, the server looks at their extension and if it is one
  32. of a certain set, assigns a best-guess gopher item type to the file.
  33. Any ".gif" file is usually identified by the server as type 'I', and
  34. thus known to Xgopher as an image type.  If you are doing the ftp
  35. through an old server it may not be smart about images -- try going
  36. through a server that you suspect is current (e.g., umn!).

  38. And, you definitely SHOULD be able to fool Xgopher into things!  It
  39. is a feature that you can enter any item type you want on the "Enter
  40. Gopher Item" panel and try different ways to access data.  This is 
  41. actually one way to fool the server indirectly also (for ftp's), since
  42. its type assignment is just best-guess as I mentioned above.
