- Dear John,
-
- My colleagues say the the easiest way to do what you want is to "DXF Out", but
- I suspect that you've tried that already.
-
- We have had a great deal of success in translating image formats from whatever
- - to whatever, using a PC based program called "IMAGE ALCHEMY" from Handmade
- Software, Inc.
-
- One interesting example was when we scanned 400 b&w aerial photographs (9 x 9"
- at 1"=800') into 300 dpi PCX files. We geo-rectified each to agree with the
- geometry of 7.5' quads which we had scanned and rectified. We took the
- resultant georectified photo images, and cropped and edge matched them,
- resulting in a reasonably stable "mosaic" of a very large area. We then took
- those PCX files and ran them through Image Alchemy, converting them into 24
- bit TIFF format. These files were then available for load into Arc/Info.
-
- Image Alchemy has proven valuable, in that we have yet to encounter a
- situation where there is not a way to get from here to there. The program is
- readily available over the counter and is relatively cheap. Handmade Software
- donated a copy to us for use during the Hurricane Andrew response and
- recovery, in which we were involved.
-
- We were using the InFoCAD GIS software product as the bedrock for FEMA, but
- found the need to import, process and then export images (as well as tons of
- other spatial data) to other participants, several of whom were using
- Arc/Info. Individual files of 6 to 12 mb each were not uncommon and, given
- adequate storage space, Image Alchemy chewed through them all with no
- difficulty. We were messing with high resolution color aerial imagery (1200
- dpi)that had some files as large as 45mb. Even those converted successfully,
- although the processing time (on a 486/33 pc) was kind of long for a
- production environment.
