- 1. Sounds like GIS is the tool you should be using.

- 2. Lots of data are available, depending on what scale you wish to
- operate at. You might start with a call to 1-800-USA-MAPS, from
- which you can get ordering information and descriptions of the USGS
- digital map products. I know there is a CD-ROM out with all the DLGs
- (Digital Line Graphs -- a vector file format) on it for the US. Also,
- I believe there is a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) available covering
- the entire US.

- Again, a lot depends on what scale you are dealing with. If you want to
- look at maps that cover the continental US on an 8.5 X 11 page, (around
- 1:7,500,000) you are talking about something that is easily doable. On
- the other hand, if you want to map the US at 1:24,000, you are going to
- need a BIG computer (and a lot of help).
