  13. M:  The customisation issue we have addressed by developing the whole system
  14. M:in an object-oriented language.  We wrote our own language called
  15. M:Smallworld Magik for this, because we felt that all the commercially
  16. M:available languages had shortcomings for what we wanted to do.  This is
  17. M:closer to Smalltalk than C++ in flavour.  We fully support multiple
  18. M:inheritance, polymorphism, dependencies etc.  The vast majority of the
  19. M:GIS code which we supply is written in Magik, and the customer can extend
  20. M:and customise the system in Magik.

  22. M:database is completely continuous with no partitions, so we don't have
  23. M:to worry about edge matching, which is often a significant cost in
  24. M:data capture.

  26. M:spatial indexing built in at a deep level to give us good performance.
