- While looking through Ed Krol's excellent book THE WHOLE INTERNET:
- USER'S GUIDE AND CATALOG I found an interesting entry in the
- section on "Formulating a WAIS Search." [WAIS is a distributed text
- searching system. Based on key words the server returns a list of
- documents/sources that match the query. Each item returned is
- scored between 0-1000 based upon a crude measure of how closely it
- meets the search criteria.]
-
- The example calls originally for information on
-
- social work
- education
- parenting
-
- The second item returned (with a score of 625) is found in an index
- called:
- ncgia-technical-reports !!
-
- When the search is then narrowed to
-
- behavior problems in gifted children
-
- WAIS returns, with a score of 1000, a file "90-9.txt" from the
- ncgia tech-reports index!
-
- New research areas in GIS???
