  12. While looking through Ed Krol's excellent book THE WHOLE INTERNET:
  13. USER'S GUIDE AND CATALOG I found an interesting entry in the
  14. section on "Formulating a WAIS Search." [WAIS is a distributed text
  15. searching system. Based on key words the server returns a list of
  16. documents/sources that match the query. Each item returned is
  17. scored between 0-1000 based upon a crude measure of how closely it
  18. meets the search criteria.]

  20. The example calls originally for information on

  23.      education
  24.      parenting
  25.  
  26. The second item returned (with a score of 625) is found in an index
  27. called:

  30. When the search is then narrowed to

  34. WAIS returns, with a score of 1000, a file "90-9.txt" from the
