- ]People look at the % increase and realize that U.S. heterosexual HIV
- ]infection can go from a little problem to a very big problem very quickly.
- Then why hasn't it? The numbers have changed little, and we are 12 years
- into this epidemic. Pattern 2 countries have a huge heterosexual AIDS
- problem - but the US doesn't. I submit that whatever is different between
- the US and pattern 2 countries is the difference - our epidemic just
- hasn't taken off, except among homosexuals, drug abusers, and those
- who have sex with them.
- ]
- ]But you have no idea who your partner had sex with last week, or last
- ]year, or 5 years ago.
- Yes, but since the female->male transmission rate is tiny, it is less
- important than with gay sex.
- ]
- ]If a promiscuous high school student in a small town becomes infected, for
- ]what ever reason, and starts to have sex with other promiscuous students
- ]at the same high school, how long before a significant portion of the
- ]highschool becomes infected ?
- A VERY long time, because AIDS is just not very contagious - especially
- from women to men.
- ]
- ]And how many need to become infected before you think its a significant
- ]problem.
-
- ]Epidemics are still controllable when they still occur in little clusters.
- ]Unfortunately, when its reported that a certain group of people have a very
- ]high rate of infection, you do your best to deterimine how these people
- ]are different from you, and then say "its not my problem."
-
- Well, it's still a problem. It's just that the emphasis on heterosexual
- AIDS is overblown. Consider how many extremely promiscuous males
- there are among sports stars, and how few of them have caught AIDS (Magic
- was by his own admission extremely promiscuous).
