  11. SCSI-2, EISA -- they sound great.  But what kind of throughput are people
  12. really getting from them?   What I find seems to indicate that most of
  13. the disks today are putting out no more than one to two megabytes a second.

  15. Is this wrong?  If it's right, then I doubt you gain much from a SCSI bus
  16. that can go at 10 mb/s instead of 5 mb/s, or an EISA adapter that can
  17. do much more.

  19. Time your raw read times on a quiet system (as root) with

  21.     time dd if=/dev/{drive} of=/dev/null bs=35k count=256
  22.  
  23. Twiddle the numbers as appropriate and look at the real time figure that
  24. comes out to calculate megabytes/second.  Am I missing something with my
  25. Adaptek 1542B and Fujuitsu 500mb SCSI disk?  Are some of you getting rates
  26. of 5mb/second, or over 5mb/second on SCSI-2 disks or EISA systems?
