- SCSI-2, EISA -- they sound great. But what kind of throughput are people
- really getting from them? What I find seems to indicate that most of
- the disks today are putting out no more than one to two megabytes a second.
-
- Is this wrong? If it's right, then I doubt you gain much from a SCSI bus
- that can go at 10 mb/s instead of 5 mb/s, or an EISA adapter that can
- do much more.
-
- Time your raw read times on a quiet system (as root) with
-
- time dd if=/dev/{drive} of=/dev/null bs=35k count=256
-
- Twiddle the numbers as appropriate and look at the real time figure that
- comes out to calculate megabytes/second. Am I missing something with my
- Adaptek 1542B and Fujuitsu 500mb SCSI disk? Are some of you getting rates
- of 5mb/second, or over 5mb/second on SCSI-2 disks or EISA systems?
